Bipolar Disorder is tough to live with. Oprah is talking with those who have hurt those they love because of their Bipolar Disorder. What did you think of the show?

I did watch the Oprah show today about being bi-polar. It was amazing. I know a couple of people with this and they've handled it well.
I also saw the show with Jenny McCarthy and Holly Robinson Peete about their kids with autism. There was also another show a few weeks ago about autism. What they didn't cover was the fact the some celebrities can afford kitchen staff to help with the special diets as well as therapies. The other aspect that wasn't covered was children who are born with autism and Fragile X syndrome. This is what our son has. I wrote an e-mail to the Oprah show about this and hopefully I'll get a reply. Maybe they'll get some pediatricians or other medical researchers that can comment on the necessity of having the bloodwork done and other genetic workups to determine that this is a possible factor and that it has nothing to do with wheat or dairy in their diets, yeast infections somewhere in their bodies, or immunizations. I've read a lot about autism lately and what we're doing (early intervention with behavioral and speech therapies) are exactly what we should be doing. I don't want to put my child at risk by trying some "miracle cure" or other remedy.
Thanks for sending me the e-mails about the Oprah shows.
I have now become a "mom on a mission". I think parents should be FULLY informed before making decisions that could alter their children't lives.
Thanks for listening!!
Peace,
Linn

Hey Suz,

I am by no means an expert on Bipolar dissorder.. and I did not watch the Oprah show..But, I have my 2 cents on it all I have lived with/married a man who didn't know he had it, I just learned over time.. he was not so stable.. and resulted in the end to our marriage and years of fighting him to realize what was going on with him.. Finally court ordered to take a psych eval in order to have time with our 7 yr old.. resulted in the discovery of mild BioPolar dissorder.. along with other things.. ! Tho thanksfully learned he needed to do something.. and now manages his mental health with medication.

Boy can It can be a very distructive dissorder. This man ultimately became a diagnosed alcholic with a string of unfortunate events to realize along the way... and is currently living within a cycle of good months bad months. Frustrated and a extremely difficult time on me, our daughter, my family and financially tough as well with back and forths to court for almost 2 years now... Cry/Sob
This man is the father to my 7.5 yr old. An amazingly caring artistic, fun, father when up.. and horrible monster when down. Fortunately it has been a stable summer and my daughter has had many more wonderful times with him than in the past. I do live in constant wonder .. since the years of struggles.. about when he will drop into that depression and destructive cycle again! I pray he stays where he is for our daughters sake.. and because I do care for his well being as his exwife!

Anyway, so what I am trying to say.. is I lived with a person with mild bipolar dissorder.. I can not imagine how families deal with this when it is their own children being diagnosed..and how to survive as a family. My heart goes out to these families... Can't just leave your kids like I left my husband.. I hope this story on Oprah brings light to this dark topic.. and sheds hope to these families.. !
